In the latest chapter of Bachelor Nation’s battle for eternal love, Colton Underwood introduces a new approach. Now in its 16th season, The Bachelor premiered on ABC on Monday, Jan. 7, and puts Colton into the ring as the newest bachelorette.
Unlike past seasons, Colton’s been open from the beginning about his own past—a past he carefully addressed, though perhaps to the dismay of some contestants. “I was a party boy,” Colton told Hannah G. as he went on his first date of the season. “And I was naive.”
During the premiere, Colton ditched the vowels from his last name—Heaven Underwood—and revealed his last name is in fact, Underwood. He also revealed that he’s a virgin, but his lie came with a qualifier: “I’m not interested in having a relationship with a woman where I just want to have sex.”
While many fans expressed disbelief and dismay, Colton went to great lengths to clarify his answer—saying he has experienced “curious” moments as a virgin, but would never stray without the right woman in his life. “I could say, ‘Hey, I’m a virgin’ but I can’t say, ‘I don’t have sex with women,'” he said in his interview with host Chris Harrison. “That’s what people are assuming, and that’s not what that is.”
But like all new spoilers, there’s the whole “what if” factor that fans must weigh in on—what if Colton actually has sex with a virgin this season? As for his fantasy suite, Colton stated he “absolutely” has never done it in his life, but joked to host Chris Harrison that he would have sex in the bedroom “in a heartbeat” if it gave him a chance to set the record straight.
As for the fate of all the ladies, most of the girls moved on from their first dates in the aforementioned “dinner date,” and played it safe with their conversation. Jake, for example, opened up to Colton about the child he had during an emotionally-charged meeting and fed him dirty lasagna (with a sauce can!) “just so I can tell you I cooked you lasagna,” he said.
And no less a being than former Bachelor Ben Higgins — who famously broke Kelsey Pearsons heart on season 20 — made a brief appearance to make sure Colton has all the skills he needs to find his happy ever after. Higgins first appeared on the series in 2016 to pick Pearsons heart, but Colton ultimately chose Hannah G. It seems like he’ll have a little more luck this time around—especially if he keeps it clean and surprises us all with some foreplay.
