Cops: Ex-cop fatally shoots himself in face after shooting unarmed black man

(CNN) — A former police officer who resigned after a video showed him shooting a civilian two times was shot and killed while responding to another disturbance call, police in the Dallas suburb of Farmers Branch, Texas, said Friday.

Andrew Ashby was shot once in the chest and once in the hand after he walked up to a neighbor in her yard, said Farmers Branch Police Chief Robert Sellers.

The unidentified neighbor, who is white, called police to report a man was breaking into her house.

A family member of the 25-year-old neighbor told CNN affiliate WFAA that Ashby was a nine-year veteran of the police force and a father of two.

Ashby left the force in May, after he was seen on a video released by the family of slamming a man against a wall and shooting him in the head.

The video came from the cellphone of Carra Jewell Holt, who has said she was trying to break up a fight between her brother and Ashby when he hit and kicked her brother, and then pointed a gun at her. She says she called 911 to report the attack.

Ashby said in a statement on Thursday that Holt should have been charged with assault, not the man who was killing her brother.

“I wish I could turn back the hands of time to that night. It was the worst moment of my life,” Ashby said. “Unfortunately, what I did was the wrong thing for which I was ultimately responsible.”

Ashby resigned and he had an arrest warrant out for him.
