A new biography of Prince Harry has claimed he hasn’t spoken to his brother Prince William in months, with a source telling how Prince William has “completely closed himself off” to him.
It’s also said that Harry “hasn’t been happy with William for quite some time”.
Charles at War: The Untold Story of Prince Harry and Prince William, by author Chris Ballard, also claims that William demanded the book be delayed.
Harry and William are famously close – but the reports are a dramatic departure from earlier descriptions of their close relationship.
Can you imagine Prince Harry being disappointed by his brother? Prince Harry – well, he’s not like that. He’s born to it, isn’t he? – Harry Potter author JK Rowling
Before the romance between Prince Harry and American actress Meghan Markle was confirmed, it was said that the brothers get on extremely well.
Rowling spoke to BBC Radio 4’s Today programme about the reports.
“Can you imagine Prince Harry being disappointed by his brother? Prince Harry – well, he’s not like that. He’s born to it, isn’t he?”
She said that one of the main things her daughter has learned from the relationship between Harry and the Queen is that “it’s about a lot more than titles and jewellery. It’s about family, and it’s really sort of key to understanding the pair of them that they are, in fact, this really loving, supportive team.”
Clarence House has not commented on the claims, but the authors are unimpressed by their response.
On Twitter they said: “Prince Harry’s response to our request to delay publication of this book seems to be no response at all. He has completely closed himself off to the media”.
However, it’s not just Princes Harry and William that are reportedly estranged from one another.
Lady Kitty Spencer, the daughter of Princess Diana’s brother Earl Spencer, told The Guardian that her aunt had had a “tiff” with Princes William and Harry in early 2013, shortly after she had announced she was pregnant with Prince George.
“She was shocked about the coverage in the papers, and I think she felt betrayed by the royal family,” Lady Spencer said.
A Clarence House spokeswoman said the couple “will not be commenting on the contents of the book” – although Lady Spencer had, in March, said: “It [the rift] will go on for as long as it feels right.”
In his article, Charles at War author Chris Ballard said that “a lot of bad blood” still existed between the two brothers, adding: “Harry believes his brother has been stymied by an establishment machine that is unwilling to give the young prince any hope of succeeding”.
The book also says that Prince William had written to the author in an attempt to damage his reputation, while Prince Harry has always wanted his brother to succeed him.
In 2013, Prince Harry was reported to have boasted: “The only way his [William’s] job will ever come to an end is if he dies first”.
Prince Harry will be celebrating his 33rd birthday on Friday – before his brother’s 36th birthday.
